About this Helpout

Hey! In this Helpout, I want to work with you to help develop your funny ideas for the Internet. I want this to be a highly tailored and customizable experience (so you should have an idea already in mind before you reach out) where you can bring your video sketch, web series, Tumblr, Twitter account, McSweeney's-style essay, or whatever and we can brainstorm on it together. Whether you know exactly what you want to do with it or are stalling out and need a pair of unbiased ears, I'm your guy. It's tailored to your needs, so it would be best to message me ahead of time with your pitch and your needs so we hit the ground running.

On this Helpout, I can help you out with:

  • Videos (one-off, web series, vlogging)
  • Podcasts
  • Long-form comic pieces/essays
  • Persona-driven Twitter account
  • An entire website of your own devisement with articles, contributors, and you name it
  • Memes and animated GIFs
  • Tumblr
  • Web comics
  • Vine/Instagram
  • Something experimental (the weirder the better, please)
  • Anything else funny you want to post online

Additionally, if you need tips on script or story structure, advice on directing actors, or want to hear about anything else germane to Internet comedy, let me know and I'm happy to help you with it.

About David

I live to help nurture other people's comedy. I've been professionally collaborating with other writers for as long as I've had a career, serving as an editorial consultant for Adult, an editor for The Onion in Chicago for half a decade, and creating and being the sole instructor for The Second City training center's Humor Writing for the Internet program. I am positively thrilled to be bringing that same dynamic to Google Helpouts, sharing the experience and expertise I have cultivated in the last decade and let others who aren't physically in comedy hubs like Chicago or LA benefit from them.

Other qualifications:
  • Longtime freelance contributor to publications like McSweeney's, Maxim, Wired, IFC, Funny or Die, Comedy Central's Indecision Forever.
  • Video producer for E3, the video game industry's annual convention.
  • Created and taught "The Business of Indie Games" for DePaul University.
  • Taught sketch and improv at The Second City.
  • Member of The Second City's directing program 2013 class, a program that only takes six people annually.
  • Working with iO West and iO Chicago to launch their forthcoming online comedy channel.
  • Many of my students have gone on to create comedy websites of their own.
  • I'm not just a dusty academic: I have started a highly selective, crowdsourced comedy channel/production house called Now What?; I am currently writing several scripts; and I am also in the process of starting/producing a live-theater show debuting this summer.

I found this Helpout incredibly helpful. I left with insightful, creative ideas to take my essay to the finish line, as well as a solid direction to steer the blog I am working on.

One thing I loved about this is that David worked with me beforehand, too, providing initial feedback on the 2 projects I wanted to discuss. The session was really well structured. We covered all the points I was looking for feedback/ideas on, and I was very happy with the end result.

David truly goes above and beyond for his students.

David is top notch and I highly recommend him. I'm a former student of his from Second City and remained in contact with him after the classes were over. David is very straight forward (which I love), knows his stuff, and can help you realize the potential that you have. I'll continue to be talking with David and creating awesomeness.
